Poets of the 1960

The era of the 60's was a time of silly dances, interesting haircuts, and colorful clothes. It was a time when people said groovy, far out and keep on trucking. The era of the 60's was the time of Marilyn Monroe, the assignations of JFK, Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King. The 60’s were also a time known for Civil Right Breakthroughs, Vietnam War Protesters, and Black Movement. A few other things the 60's was known for were full service gas stations, love INS, the sign of the yeng yang and peace marches. The 60’s were known for subliminal advertising, vinyl records, and manual typewriters. Most of all though the 60's was known for its outstanding poets.
During the 60's black movement was occurring which inspired many African American poets to come out and be recognized. Most of the poets I will be discussing wrote poems about their life as an African American or being an African American in the 60's.They also wrote about slavery, freedom of speech and many other things. Those poets who were not African American wrote poems about the natural world or events that went on in the 60's. Other poets in that time wrote about their childhood. Everyday life, war, or they criticized other poets in

Here are a few of the poets I did research on Arna Bontemps, Gary Snyder, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and EE Cummings. Arna Bontemps was born in 1902 in Alexandria, Louisiana, and he passed away in 1973. He was an anthologist who won the Jane Adams Book Award for children. He and Langston Hughes worked together for many years on different projects. Gary Snyder was born in San Francisco in 1930. It is not known when he died. Mr. Snyder wrote about the real world and he wrote myths. What he is best known for was his mystical poems and environmental themes. Sylvia Plath was born in 1932 on October 27 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her best work that made her famous and which, she is remembered for is her collection of The Colossus. Unfortunately in February 1963 at the age of 30 Sylvia became very depressed and took her own life. Anne Sexton was born in Newton, Massachusettes in 1928. She was known as a super model but readers remember her for her emotional poetry. Just like Sylvia Plath, Anne took her own life at the high point of her career. She committed suicide in 1974 but her work is still highly respected. EE Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusettes on October 14, 1894. Mr. Cummings was one of the most original poets of the 20th century. He won the dial award for being such a great poet. On September 3, 1962, EE Cummings died in North Conway, New Hampshire of a brain hemorrhage.

Some other great poets of the 1960's were John Berryman, Allen Ginsberg,
