The first grade classroom of Heather Deschane is full Of Denver Bronco paraphernalia. She was raised and lived in Colorado for many years until she got her degree in teaching. She explains, “When I was five my mother had told me that I would come home from Sunday school and would go to my room and play Sunday school with my sister.” “This is when I first knew that I wanted to become a teacher.”
Her first job as a teacher was at an elementary school in east Lubbock teaching the fourth grade. She states, “I was amazed at how many young students already knew curse words and we’re using them.” This was one of the worst moments she has experienced while being a teacher.
She spent three and a half years in an undergraduate school before getting her teaching certification. She explains, “After getting my teaching certificate I had gone to a job fair that was really beneficial.” Getting a
“One of the hardest things about being a teacher is when you have a child that you’re really worried about and having to tell the parents the bad news is very stressful.” There have not been very many cases of abuse or neglect that she has had to report to CPS (Child Protective Services). It is very hard for a teacher to make a call to CPS, but if a teacher does not make the call they can be held responsible for not reporting the abuse or neglect. When faced with making a call to CPS most teachers will involve the principal and/or the counselors so that the matter is followed up after being reported.
“Even after being a teacher for thirteen years I still must go to work shops during the summer.” She adds, “During the summer is also the time that I think of a yearly plan for next year.” Teaching first grade is her favorite because there are more things that are fun to choose from.
