Crop Circles; The Truth is Out There

Crop circles are shapes that are found in grain-related crops, in which the vegetation is bent into angles and then spiraled into complex patterns (Andrews 37). Crop circles have been around since the ancient times, but have only started to appear in numbers since the mid-1960’s. Ever since then, the world has been perplexed as to the makers of these bizarre formations. Many of the crop circle designs are large and complex, and often appear overnight. Various explanations have been discussed, but there is still much of a debate as to who, or what, could be making these circles.

The Gaia Theory, one theory that incorporates the ideas of “Mother Earth” showing signs of distress, was first thought out by a scientist named Timothy Zell in 1970. Later, in 1972, a British chemist by the name of James Lovelock refined the ideas of the Gaia Theory. The theory proposed that our planet is not lifeless; in fact, the crop circles are a response to “the atrocities committed against the planet by man and all our endeavors” (Andrews 63). Crop circles would be comparable to a bruise, or perhaps some bleeding that has become scarred, much like when a human gets hurt. Extensive industrialization and pollution is destroying the ozone l

In recent years, companies have used crop circles as a means of advertising. Not only is it blatantly obvious that these crop circle “formations” are fake, but it reduces the impact of circles to a mere “billboard”. In July of 1994, a bicycle design was created in a wheat field, near Cheesefoot Head, Hampshire, England. This design was made along the route of the Tour de France, which is a well-known bicycle race. The design was formed in the first year the race was in Britain. (Andrews 144). On another occasion, a design of a minivan was formed into a wheat field in East Field, Alton Barnes, Wiltshire, England. Mitsubishi Motors commissioned the car design, and it took the “crop circle designers” two full days to make (Andrews 144). These attempts at advertising are made in poor taste, and take away the beauty and mysteriousness of true crop circle formations.

Microwave radiation was thought to cause the swelling of the nodes in the plants and other vegetation in the crop circles (Dudley). Nodes are the point on a stem where a leaf is attached. Microwaves are “high-frequency electromagnetic waves, one millimeter to one meter in wavelength” (Andrews 68). A problem with this theory is that there is not enough microwave radiation in nature to cause the plants to collapse. If there were enough microwave radiation naturally occurring, it would pose a serious health risk to everyone. Related to microwaves is another interesting discovery. Marshall Dudley, a scientist from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, went to England and took soil samples from a particular crop circle. He discovered that there were thirteen short-lived radionuclides in the soil sample. Radionuclides are a radioactive nuclide, which is a particular species of atom (Dudley). Many explanations were dismissed, as that they do not naturally occur in nature and that a hoaxer could not possibly form them.

When there is a phenomenon as mysterious and intriguing as crop circles, there is going to be people who deliberately try to spoil it. These people are known as hoaxers.
