Group Technology is a very important concept in the industrial world, which carry Significant meaning in defining, rearranging and grouping the similar parts in order to have the maximum benefits of their similarity in satisfying the production process. If we look to planners and decision makers we will realize that they are using the best alternative in solving the problems by referring to similar cases that occurred before as a model.And then we will see obviously that one solution can be used efficiently to solve a set of problems; that will lead to save money and time. By applying the fact of one solution available for group of problems to the production process we will see that Group Technology is the most beneficial method for the purpose of satisfying the manufacturing system. Rearranging and grouping is the backbone of the group technology and its applications. Why is setup time reduction important to cells? • Simplifies production and assembly planning and control, scheduling, load balancing, and capacity requirements analysis. The primary benefit of cellular manufacturing is the reduction in throughput time, resulting from being able to flow materials from one operation to another. If we produce a batch of goods in batch mode, we have complete all of operation A on the batch before the batch is moved to operation B and so forth. If instead, we take the first item in the batch and move it directly to operation B upon completion of operation A, and so forth for all the operations. The resultant batch can be produced much more quickly as it incrementally flows down the production line. There is no magic in this , we are simply re-inventing the assembly line , The benefits are , however , very real compared to long delay in some batch-oriented operations. We can summarize the advantages in two sections • Improves quality by reducing scrap and process variations due to better monitoring of operations.
