In “Allegory of the Cave” Plato describes a cave where there are people chained so they can not move. Behind them is a fire and it is casting shadows in front the captives, who believe that the shadows are what the truth is. The prisoners see shadow reflections from guards who are patrolling in the background. Now the prisoners do not know that they are being held captive since this is how it has been for them since their birth. So they have to believe what they see in front of them and what they hear is indeed the truth.
