Smoking Kills
Now we've heard it all before. Smoking kills. Smoking is bad. Quit smoking now. And maybe for some, this has had enough impact to help them quit. However we can plainly see that the vast majority of smokers have not quit. What we need now is an even greater incentive for those who can not take those needed steps to quit on their own. One such plan is to introduce by-laws making smoking in all public buildings prohibited. Since smoking tends to be started as a social aid this may help to discourage many people from starting in the first place. After all it is difficult to be sociable while out in the cold smoking instead of inside with friends having a meal. My name is Shari and I am here today to show you that the government made the right decision when introducing smoking by-laws and that that decision will, in the end, benefit everyone. The government’s response to the health threat that ETS poses is to introduce by-laws regulating the public’s exposure to this deadly mix. This by-law is the Smoking Control By-law. This has been one of the most controversial issues in London recently. It is important to view this by-law as a positive step towards protecting the community from serious harm.
Now let’s revisit Barb Tarbox, the former smoker with lung cancer, and her views on cigarettes. “Oh, I hate them. I hate them! Honest to God. My daughter—I have to say goodbye to the most incredible daughter I could ever have dreamt of, and my husband of 20 years. The pain---there is no pain greater than the pain of cancer, and the pain of grief. I’m going to be dying very, very soon, and it leaves “them” on their own. You can’t imagine that pain.” At the end of her interview she makes an impassioned plea. “Listen, promise me, if you smoke, you’ll quit. OK?” Finally the government is listening to such pleas and is taking steps to at least protect those who are choosing not to smoke at all. This is why these by-laws are such a good thing. This is why it is important to support the government’s efforts and the efforts of all those people who are trying to quit smoking.
