So You Want to be a Professional Hacker?

Explosive growth in the computer industry over the last decade has made new technologies become a huge foundation for many companies, big and small. As a result, computers tend to be at the center of this foundation. Of course, if corporations wish to be noticed they need a way to mass advertise. Enter the world wide web. “E-commerce” is the biggest trend in today’s marketplace. But, as most know, the internet also provides a huge playground for the many “hackers” that have nothing better to do other then destroy and tamper with the property of others.

There is a type of person that thrives on chaos; the malevolent “hacker”. Some hackers act on revenge or just impersonal mischievousness. But whatever their motives, their deeds can be destructive to a person's computer. An attack by a “hacker” not only affects the victim, but others as well.

Many may know a “hacker” as “A despicable person bent on corrupting their computer and causing as many problems as possible”. This is the biggest misconception of all eternity. You may be surprised to know that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, cofounders of Apple, were both avid “hackers” during the 1970’s. Back in the days of the room sized computers

Phreaking, now labeled by the United States Department of Justice as wire fraud, allows a person to make phone calls to anywhere and anyone for absolutely nothing. It also allowed the conference call to be developed without the phone company knowing anything about it. Large numbers of people, mainly within the Steves’ inner circles of Berkley California’s phreaking societies, would gather together deep inside the inner workings of the phone system and talk in chat rooms, much like today’s instant messenger services (Mitnick).

The legitimate hacking of information continued until corporations began using the power of copy write laws to protect their products from being altered. Computer data under went a full blown coup d'état changing from a working computerized communism, offering every bit of information into free domain where it could be made better for the good of the hacking community; to the fascist dictatorship of the copy write laws. The computer inclined community of pure-hearted do-gooders became enraged.

The profession of hacking is one that demands a high price. The base salary of a hacker is at about a starting price of one hundred thousand dollars a year plus a completion bonus, paid to the hacker when he breaks through the system. Because of this high price companies are unwilling to pay vast amounts of people to do the work. Along with opening a possible security gap this also means that jobs are in short supply.

that had no visual interface, “hackers”, or “phreakers” as they were known, still looked for a way to cause mischief. They found it in the first comings of the nation wide bell phone system (SuperSeth, 4).
