Incongruity and Irrationality

Albert Camus and Gabriel Garc a Marquez both use incongruity and irrationality as significant themes in their novels to display their views about society. In The Stranger by Camus, the main character, Mersault, lives in a world full of irrational behviors and actions. Meursault’s own actions have no logical reaoning behind them. Similar to this, in Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Marquez, there are many incongruous elements. The main event of the novel, the murder of Santiago Nasar, is a result of irrational behavior by the whole society. The lack of reasoning and logic in both these novels displays how prevalent irrationality is in all societies.

The Stranger begins with the narrator receiving a telegram and learning that “Maman died today.” Although one would expect Meursault to be grieving over the death of his mother, he does not feel sad. Yet at the same time he does not feel happy, instead he has no emotions and is indifferent to all that is happening. The only aspects of his mother’s death that he is concerned about is the practical and physical elements. Before he leaves for the funeral he is worried about having the proper attire, “ I was a little distracted because I still had to go up to Emmanuel’s p

Chronicle of a Death Foretold is also about a murder without reason. The whole book revolves around the death of Santiago Nasar. Santiago is thought to have taken the virginity of Angela Vicario. On her wedding night, her husband returns her to her house after discovering that she is not a virgin. Her twin brothers ask her to name the person that took her virginity and she names Santiago Nasar. Her brothers set out to kill Nasar in order to gain back the honor for their family.

lace to borrow a black tie and an arm band.”

Marquez used the absurdity and lack of reason to criticize the society’s behvaiors as did Camus. Both wanted to prove the irrationality that is prevalent in most societies today. Through their novels they were able to show that illogical thinking can lead to irrational behavior, even cause the death of people without any reason. All this only leads to show the existence of irrationality and the futility of attempts to impose rational thinking in this irrational world.

Raymond Sintes, is another neighbor of Meursault. He invites Meursault over for dinner one night and tells him the story of his mistress. He had suspected that she was cheating on him, so he beat her and she left him. Now he wants to punish her again for cheating on him, so he asks Meursault to help him with his plan. Meursault agrees and tha plan goes through. Raymond lures his mistress back and then beats her again. Later on, when Raymond, Meursault and Marie are
