Blood thirsty bats
When at a baseball game forty years ago, the crack of a baseball bat would send chills down the spectator’s spines; but the crack of a wooden bat has been replaced by a metallic ping. In today's society people feel that money is more important than the safety of baseball players all over the world. People have to understand that players are being seriously injured, some of the injuries resulting in death because of the metal bats the players use. Metal bats might make the games more exciting with more homeruns but these bats are injuring the players. In the business world today, there are many deals that are made between college, universities, and bat companies. Universities and bat manufacturers have a common alliance when it comes to use of their product. A report done on an aluminum bat made by Thurston reported, “some 150 Division I coaches have team and personal contracts with various bat manufacturers. The bat companies pay some coaches stipends of $20,000 or more and a few make more than $50,000.” These schools are making a profit on deals that people do not even know about. Thurston did a study on ninety college players in 1997 on the difference in the way the game would change when
they used metal bats versus wooden bats. The results were interesting, “when the players switched to wood, their batting averages dropped .107 points and their home run production dropped 67 percent.” This just shows when players are using wooden bats averages drop, which could also make the injury percentage drop as well. The reason for this is because when using wooden bats the ball does not come off of the bat with as much velocity as it does when using metal bats. The injuries would drop because the pitchers would have more time to react to the ball coming off of the bat. There are many different views on the subject of metal bats versus wooden bats. There are innocent children having their lives taken because they only had 3/10ths of a second to react to the ball. Baseball is supposed to be the great American past time; but there are too many injuries and deaths because our society feels that professional athletes are the only ones that should use wooden bats. Companies that manufacture metal bats are on the winning side of the deal because as long as universities are allowed to keep using metal bats they will continue to make huge profits. Players are being seriously injured and steps have to be taken to put player safety before anything else. The restrictions that the NCAA have made will hopefully pave the way for all leagues to change their rules regarding metal bats and thus reduce personal injury. The
