SNL
It is a chilly October Saturday night in the city that never sleeps. Even though it is late there are still people wandering the streets. You wander down to the world famous Rockefeller Center and step inside to get out of the cold. You hear laughter coming from deeper inside the building and you move towards it. Soon you are standing outside a doorway and it is labeled studio 8H. You step inside and then it hits you. “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!!!” The crowd goes wild and another night of live sketch comedy begins. In reality most of us will probably never be able to visit New York, much less go to the season premier of Saturday Night Live, SNL for short. However, the distance between you and New York does not have to keep you from enjoying one of the greatest shows ever created. Have you ever been stuck home on a Saturday night with nothing to do? Maybe you were at a lame party just looking for some relief? Wouldn’t it have been great if you had turned on the TV and turned the channel to NBC and seen some of the world’s finest upcoming comedy stars in action? I have been watching the latest group of upcoming stars every Saturday for the past four years. I also spent an entire summer watching classic episo
You were told the origins of the show, its ability to attract high profile stars, and its rollercoaster ride from start to present. SNL is such a deep subject and not all the facets of the show could be covered in such a short amount of time. According to the Encyclopedia of Television Broadcasts is it, "an American institution" and therefore could be studied and discussed as in depth as baseball and apple pie. So never again should you be sitting around with nothing to do on a Saturday. Turn on your TV and laugh. You will be joining millions of others; those in the past, the present, and the future, when you hear those words, "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" SNL ran its first broadcast on October 11, 1975. During this time period the Tonight Show was hosted by Johnny Carson, Tiger Woods had just been born, VHS was introduced, a woman climbed Mount Everest, and Paul McCartney was fined for growing marijuana. The show wasn't originally going to be called Saturday Night Live because at that time sportscaster Howard Cosell was using it for his comedy/variety show; however, it was canceled. SNL's original cast from '75 to '79 was called "The Not Ready For Prime Time Players". According to SNL-HQ.com it was a joke towards Cosell's own "Prime Time Players". The first cast was Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner. The show's first host was the famous comedian George Carlin, inventor of the "seven things you can't say on TV" joke. The first show also featured the Muppets and several spoof commercials but very few sketches. The next year Cosell's show was canceled and the show's name changed from "NBC's Saturday Night" to its current name, "SNL". During this year Chevy Chase went off to pursue an acting career and the show picked up Bill Murray from Cosell's show to take his place
