The Art of Oceania

Works of art have been analyzed according to many different schemes. art work of art should be a unique experience and must be treated as such. When analyzing a piece of art many of the categories will overlap, and some are more important for certain pieces than others. Here is one type of guide to help you make a systematic analysis of any work of art.

When writing about a selection of a work of art, think of it as an introducing the reader to works they have not seen for themselves. Then discuss them in such way that increases the reader’s understanding and appreciation of them. ( Kieft )

Identification and brief description of the piece, should be the first paragraph of the paper. Give the tittle of the work, the name of the artist, the medium and the place and date from where it was created, or the last place it had been. Observe the piece, and see if it fits into a known art movement. Describe its physical appearance; it’s color, shape, size, condition and what is being represented. The description deals with the relatively obvious, reporting what anyone might see. Explain what is interesting about the piece, and what effect it might have on people.

In order to understand and get at the real meaning of the wo

Unity and variety are complementary concerns. Unity is the appearance as one and variety is the diversity. Even thought they have different meaning they tend to come together. When a work of art has unity, both the artist and the viewer feel that if something gets change in the piece, it would damage its overall appearance. Do the proportions of a form relate to one another? Are the forms harmonious or jarring? Is the organization static or dynamic?

What connections do you see between the subject matter and the techniques the artist used? What mood has the artist expressed though the use of the techniques? At last but not least, you will want to express your own personal feelings about the work of art. What is your personal response to it? Do you think is effective? what do you like or dislike about it?

Of all the visual elements, space is the most difficult to convey in words and pictures. Space is the indefinable, general receptacle of all things - the seemingly empty space around us. (Preble, 49) How does the artist handle space? Are the forms organized on a flat surface or they set within a deep space. Is there an illusion in the presentation or the artist use a linear perspective. If the piece is an sculpture, explain if the is meant to look from the front or sides.

Does the scale of the forms seems appropriate to the setting? Scale is the relation of one thing to another. Is on of the first decisions an artist make
