O’Connor uses many unusual characters and plots to portray her stories. She also uses her stories to distinguish the personality of the time period. She shows this with the constant theme of religion and the many racial comments in her dialogue. The points of her stories are clearly identified because of these subjects. She also keeps the reader attentive with her unusual stories, characters, and plots Many of her stories share the same theme, characters and plots which also depict the time period she writes in. The purpose of this is to inform the reader that anything is possible which she easily shows in “A Good Man Is Hard To Find,” “Good Country People,” “Parker’s Back,” and “Revelation” With her incorporation of irony and exaggeration she separates herself from many other writes and could be called the best writer of the time.

Two distinct ideas emerge repeatedly in all four short stories. Racial issues and Religion find themselves in every Flannery O’Connor story. In many cases these issues reflect upon the time period of O’Connor’s work. In “Parker’s Back” Parker struggles to find his true self. It wasn’t until the tattoo of Christ on his back for him to realize his true meaning of life. In “Good Country People” Joy, an atheist, doesn’t really believe in anything until she meets this Bible salesmen. She realizes after she was taken advantage of by this fake that people have to believe in something, or everyone will be as simple as the Bible salesmen. “Some can’t be that simple” “I no I never could.” (409) In “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” the grandmother in the story doesn’t realize the importance of God until she is threatened with life. She began to pray for forgiveness to the killer in the final minutes of her life. She was a selfish and unhappy person but changed right before she died. “She would have been a good woman if it had been someone to shoot her every minute of her life.” (395) The criminal stated this because he was there to witness the change of a woman in a matter of minutes.
