The Sun Also Rises; Character Analysis

Being on one of the most emotionally and physically demanding roller coaster rides these men have probably ever been on, Jake, Mike, Cohn, and Romero get involved with some kind of relationship with Lady Brett Ashley, a sex driven woman who indulges in sex and control. Brett plans to marry her fiancee for dumb reasons, she completely ruins one man’s emotional side, she also separates from another man to keep the idea of them being together to prevent self-destruction, and she denies and disgraces the only man who she loves most of all. Brett will take these four men and emotionally discharge them while she “nick and nags” all of them trying to get out exactly what she really wants. Even though she might ruin some mens life, Brett is a “all for one” kind of dating relationship. All of these relationships take place in a period of months while Brett uses each one to satisfy her own needs and wants.

“ The symbolically impotent and necessarily static love affair between Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley exists as a constant, having already begun long before the novel started, and continuing beyond the book and past its ending”(Vance 40). Jake Barnes, the narrator and said to be the hero of the novel, fell in love

Mike Campbell is Brett’s next planned fiancee. Mike is ridiculously in love with Brett even though he knows of her short affairs with other men. Mike loves her beauty, as do all of the other men in this novel, but his love only goes as deep as her beauty and nothing else. In the first scene of the book Mike can not stop for one minute commenting on Brett’s beauty: “I say Brett, you are a lovely piece. Don’t you think she’s beautiful?” (79). Throughout most of the book Mike continues this pattern of just talking about her beauty and nothing else, and his best remark was when he said she was just a lovely, healthy wench. When Mike is drunk he has no self-control and shouts out rude comments to Brett and others. Well being that Brett saw no love with Mike, Brett shows interest in another man, a bull-fighter named Pedro Romero. Then Mike becomes angry and shouts: “Tell him bulls have no balls. Tell him Brett wants to see him in those green pants. Tell him Brett wants to know how he can get into those pants” (176). “Brett’s bowed head as Mike and Robert argue shows well her tired submission to the present situation.” (Wagner 106) After Brett’s brief affair with the bull-fighter, she will just go right back to Mike, and Mike will openly accept her back. Mike does not try to challenge her for she is a very controlling woman.

with Brett a long time ago and is still in love with her despite his being in freak accident while in the war. Jake has to find a way to deal with his impotence and the fact that he has lost all power and desire to have sex. So Brett and Jake can not be lovers, so they find no reason to try at any relationship because Brett is a very passionate woman who needs that in her relationships.

Going Back to the bull-fighter, Brett and Pedro Romero fall madly in love and run off together. Romero is the first man since Jake to make Brett lose her self-control. Sooner or Later Romero started to ask too much of Brett, she thought, so she asked him to leave. Romero was very demanding asking to grow her hair out because it would make her look more womanly. Romero also wanted to marry Brett really bad and tried to push the issue because he wanted to make sure that Brett could never leave him. In no way would there had been any compromising with Romero, he would change his expectations of Brett even though he loved her. Romero tried his “rules and regulations” to a woman with Brett and noticed that they failed miserably and impossible for Brett to accept. So, Romero leaves willingly. Romero has been left untainted by Brett, sustaining his strong-willed, correct behavior. Romero leaves without crying like Cohn or whining like Mike.

Brett’s acceptance or rejection of each of the four men was probably noticed. Cohn is a complaining, weak, accommodating adolescent who has little understanding of others or himself. Romero is near perfect, strong, courageous, an
