Flexitime
It is 9 P.M. on Friday night and Joseph Shepherd has just parked in his driveway. Late again for fifth time this week, and of course making it a clean sweep for the entire month. As he takes a minute to collect his thoughts he leans back into the headrest of his 1997 Toyota Camry. “Hmmm.” He sighed and thought to himself this will be another week of having to pay Miss Ruby, his helper, overtime. The original arrangement with Miss Ruby is for her to come in at 6 AM assist him in preparing the children (Rachel 9, Simone 6, and Simon 3) for school. Staying on after they have gone to school and performing household tasks and be there in the afternoon when they get home. This would facilitate her helping them with their homework and having dinner and snacks ready for them to consume until he gets home from work at or about 6pm. Initially this arrangement worked like a charm and Miss Ruby, having deep affections for the children agreed to it for an amazing $4000.00 per week, Monday to Friday. An upper middle-income earner Joseph was able to facilitate in his budget the $16000.00 with ease. However Miss Ruby had a family of her own and when she had to stay until 9 PM almost every evening it had to be worth her while
It is perceived that flexitime will destroy family life, because the weekends, as we know it, is the time that most parents and children get to spend quality time together. And flexitime will eliminate weekends. Another drawback as it relates to weekends is that flexitime will affect worship. As most Christians in Jamaica have corporate worship on a Sunday or Saturday. If these days become normal workdays there would be no time when the majority of the people would be available for corporate worship. Some of the positive social implications on flexitime include the following. There will be increased productivity and cost effectiveness within companies. The investment climate of Jamaica will become much more attractive due to the increased productivity and effectiveness. Flexitime will decrease absenteeism, tardiness and sick leave used to facilitate personal matters. The hours actually worked will be more productive, and there will be less slowing down toward the end of the workday. Workers tend to leave early when work is slack and work later when work is heavy. For the remaining two thirds of Jamaican population, Joseph Shepherd included, there is a need for alternative working arrangements. As traditional work schedules can cause problems for employees with families because (a) excessive work hours prevent workers from spending enough time with their families, (b) the work day either starts too early or ends too late and thus does not allow for quality time with their families, and (c) work schedules often do not mesh with child care arrangements.
