Best Friends For Life
In the middle of my fifth grade year at Smith Elementary in Gregory Michigan; I met a girl that was soon to be my life long best friend. It was in the middle of the school year when our principle walked in the classroom with his hand on the shoulder of a chubby, awkward-looking girl with Coke bottle glasses. She was wearing clothes that looked as if they had been handed down from her sisters before they got to her. You could tell by the look on most of the kids faces that she was going to be the new kid to pick on. My teacher, Mr. French, took her to the front of the class room and introduced her. “Class we have a new student today. Her name is Donna. Can everyone give her nice welcome?” Some of the class yelled out, “HI DONNA!” and then there were a few that mumbled “Hi fatso.” A few snickers could be heard throughout the class. Mr. French got very angry. We could see the sadness that over came Donna as she hung her head towards the floor. She had tears that started to puddle up in her eyes. The expression on her face seemed to tell a story of its own. It looked as if she was saying, "Here we go again!" Mr. French punished the entire class by making us stay in from reces
I saw a big smile come to her face. “SURE!" She beamed. “At first I was really angry with you. But since I lost mom I have put things into a whole new perspective. Life is to short and sometimes you have to look past some of the little things to realize what is important to you. I miss having you around too.” As we moved from the fifth grade into the sixth grade things were going to be a little different. We had moved from the elementary into the middle school. We weren’t going to be in class with each other all the time. So when lunch time came, you wouldn’t find one of us without the other. We always found time to talk and screw around together. “Yah, I will take you out there. Can we go when we get out of school?” “Let me tell you why I like hanging out with you. You don’t put people down for what they look like, how they talk, or what kind of lousy grades they get. You can put a smile on just about anyone’s face. When your day seems blue, you can usually find something positive to turn the day around. We have been friends for four years. If I was worried about what other people were going to say, I would have ended our friend ship four years ago. I guess some people will never know what a great friend they are missing out on. It’s their loss not mine!”
