The Life of Enrico Fermi

Enrico Fermi made very important contributions to the science community in the field of nuclear physics. He was born on September 29th 1901 in Rome and was the son of Alberto Fermi, a Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Communications. He attended a local grammar school and showed an early interest in mathematics and physics, which were encouraged by his father’s colleagues. Fermi, in 1918 went to college at the University of Pisa, where he spent 4 years and obtained his doctor’s degree in physics in 1922. After graduating from the University of Pisa, Enrico became a lecturer of mathematical physics and mechanics at the University of Florence for two years and later was elected professor of theoretical physics at the University of Rome until 1938.

Fermi, while at the University of Floren

ce as a lecturer, in 1926, discovered statistical laws now known as Fermi-Statistics. While Enrico was the professor at the University of Rome, he conducted experiments that demonstrated nuclear transformation occurs in almost every element exposed to neutron bombardment in the nucleus. Resulting from this work was the discovery of “slow neutrons”, leading to the discovery of nuclear fission and the production of elements lying beyond the periodic table. By 1938, Fermi was without a doubt the biggest expert on neutrons, and continued his work on them in the United States, when he was appointed professor of physics at the University of Colombia.

During the last years of Enrico's life, he also managed to entertain himself with the problem of the mysterious origin of cosmic rays, a topic that had puzzled and intrigued hi
