One Dream: Many Cultures
What is an American? According to Peter Ferrara, an American is not just one type of person. Americans come from all different religions, all different nationalities, and all types of different cultures. Americans do not all have to live in “America,” but American’s do share one thing in common; the personification of freedom. In Peter Ferrara’s journal article, What is an American, he states his definition of an American. He says, “An American is English…or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan (Ferrara, par 3). Americans come from all different descents and backgrounds, originating and living in very different parts of the world. Americans all look very different and have many different skin tones. They can be anything from short to fat, to black to white. The looks of Americans may vary, but their beliefs are one in the same. They all believe strongly in fighting for their freedom and their own personal beliefs. Whether Americans live in the United States or not, they all believe in their own personal choice of religion. America
Since Americans have fought for their freedom and won, they do not feel threatened by becoming involved with new cultures and skin tones. They understand that accepting people who are different from them can’t hurt them; it can only make them stronger and more educated about people who are diverse. According to Mr. Ferrara, “Americans welcome people from all lands, all cultures, all religions, because they are not afraid. They are not afraid that their history, their religion, their beliefs, will be overrun, or forgotten. That is because they know they are free to hold to hold to their religion, their beliefs, their history, as each of them choose (Ferrara, par10).” Peter Ferrara talks here about how Americans acknowledge all different diversities and welcome them into their land. Americans are open to all different cultures and even bring them into their daily lives. Americans are proud of their freedom and proud to stand tall and greet and teach new people that come into their daily lives about living a free life. Americans welcome all different diversities and cultures because they are not afraid to learn and accept new people for who they are. Americans are always willing to gain knowledge of new things and have the best things, and most of the time these come from different areas of the world. “And just as Americans welcome all, they enjoy the An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God (Ferrara, par 4).” In this statement, Peter Ferrara is also making the claim that Americans are entitled to whichever religion they choose. They can practice and preach the faith of their choice. They have the right to be freethinkers:
