War on iraq
Nothing, or so the old refrain goes. But what about the fall of the communism in Eastern Europe within the last decade or so? Was it not the threat of war that drove the Soviet Empire to ruin? Wasn't it President Reagan who placed the Pershing Missiles in Europe pointed right at the Soviets, despite the accusations or warmongering from the peace at all cost crowd? Wasn't it the threat of the Star Wars missile defense shield that pushed the Soviet Empire into financial ruin? It was. And the Soviet Union fell. Eastern Europe was liberated. The former Warsaw Pact countries are now some of the United States most ardent supporters in the Iraq War. Well that's a wonderfull argument, but it was the Cold War after all, no shots fired. Ok, how about the concentration camp survivors liberated from Auschwitz, Bergen-Belson, Dachau? Do you think they viewed the Allies as oppressors? What if we decided that Germany wasn't our problem, or to paraphrase Susan Sarandan, what did Hitler ever do to us? Huh? I need to know. In America's own history, wasn't the Civil War responsible for the end of slavery? This is not to glorify the benefits of war. But to suggest there is no reason ever to wage war is to ignore history.
What these anti war demonstrators are really protesting is George Bush. Bill Clinton attacked countries, without the U.N. and there was no outcry. So what gives? Read their signs, listen to the rhetoric and some common themes come out. They hate capitalism. They hate a strong America. They hate Republicans. Some are retreads from the sixties. Some are college students who are listening to Marxist teachers. The organizers are socialist entities. This is who is behind the anti war movement. Folks who pine for the good old days of a Soviet empire. Ah the joys of Stalin. Nothing like a gulag to warm a leftist heart. No wonder they are rushing to protect Saddam. He is everything they love. He's a socialist, brutal dictator, he tortures dissidents and rules with an iron fist. Perfect. These folks are sadly misinformed. By protesting our government they are inadvertantly placing our troops in jeopardy. I am certain most would disagree, but by making life miserable for our President and our Military Commanders, they are helping those forces that are trying to harm our troops. That's why I stand with our President, our troops and their families.
