Personality types in lord of the flies

Simon is by far the kindest and most moral character in the book, to the point where his goodness is as obsolete as Jack’s evilness. Where Jack and Ralph appear to be opposites, Simon merely represents a kind of ingrained, nearly inhuman kindness that sets him apart from everyone else. If Jack is immoral, Roger is untainted brutality and satanic. By the time the reader meets Roger, he already has lost his morals, or he may have never had them. Roger is purely evil, and he takes delight in the agony of others. He is Jack, to the extreme. While Jack merely likes power and the hunt, Roger enjoys the pain of others. Roger delights in throwing stones at a younger boy, missing him on purpose, but only because of the lingering pressures of society. It doesn’t him long to lose these pressures, and he is soon purely hate- Roger is the absolute opposite of Simon. Golding uses Roger to represent unadulterated evil and bloodlust.

Ralph morality is strong, but not as strong as his incredible work ethic. At the beginning of the novel, while all of the other boys are merely concerned with playing and eating, Ralph sets about building huts and figuring out how to get them off of the island. Ralph is elected leader because of his commanding presence and his ideas of what to do. At the beginning, he held power over everyone else because they were in awe of him. However, as they became barbaric and savage, Ralph’s power slimmed and Jack’s power increased. Ralph’s morality shows through the strongest when he throws the Lord of the Flies to the ground and defends himself with the stick. It also shows through as the reader understands that Ralph knows that all boys have some evil, but he is determined not to let it take him over.
