The trouble with Children and video games

Many young people have become largely consumed by video games. Today’s youth have a wide variety of video games to choose from. These games range from drug wars to virtual killing games. In today’s gaming world they even have the choice to play with a group of people online or alone. However, with these games being extremely violent they may be having psychological effects on the players. Because of the extreme violence in these games many companies have been forced to use “parental advisories” on them. Although these advisories may be helpful how many people actually enforce them.

While there are a wide variety of video games to choose from, the most controversial yet highly popular are the games with the most violence. Two examples of these types of games are Counter-Strike and Kingpin. Counter-Strike is a realistic depiction of war between terrorist and counter-terrorist. In this game there can be up to thirty-two players at a time. The players have a wide variety of guns and grenades they can use during their fight. There are two different ways this game can be played. One way is where the terrorist must plant a bomb and destroy a designated area. The other way the terrorist has captured hostages and the counter-terr

Experts suggest that parents get more involved. Parents should check out websites about the games, pay close attention to screen shots or pictures placed on the game packages, only pick prosocial games not antisocial, and lastly read the advisories. Parents should also keep in mind how active their children are outside of the home. When considering the social aspects parents should remember to evaluate the child’s personality: whether they are outgoing or introverted, their age, and how psychologically advanced they are. However, it is still believed the most effective way to prevent these depictions of violence from becoming a reality is to talk to the children.

Stephen Kline did a survey that concluded eighty percent of parents believe their children use the computer as an educational tool. However, only one percent of children actually use educational software. Because of the all the shocking statistics parental advisories are now mandatory. Unfortunately these advisories may not be as accurate as hoped. There are five different parental advisory ratings. The five rating are; EC for early children, E for everyone, T for teen, M for mature, and AO for adults only. While games with an EC rating do not contain violence inappropriate for children, E rated games can be a little misleading. Some games that are rated E have been known to contain violence, harsh la
