In the Unit # 2 reactor, resin had built up in the feed water decontamination tank. Workers tried to free up the resin but could not get it off the tank. Even the plants back up for this kind of problem failed to remove the resin. Once the cleaning’s failed every valve throughout the feed water system closed shut. When the feed water system closed shut the reactor started to tremble violently and the force of it ripped out the valve controls and caused extensive damages to the cooling system. Eventually the reactor over heated and started to rupture and the radioactive water then spilled into the auxiliary building and into the drain system which forced workers to evacuate the building.

The accident at Three Mile Island could have been very easily avoided. It was human and design errors which created the problems. The first error was the undocumented design change to the air system. If the plant supervisors knew of the design update they most likel

Near the Three Mile Island Plant a local resident by the name of Annie Meyers had a two-headed calf that was born on her family farm two years after the accident. The family preserved the heads to show curious people. Annie Meyers' husband died of thyroid cancer a few years after the calf was born. Several years after her husbands death her son also developed thyroid cancer. Last that was heard was that he was seeking medical attention to have the cancer removed. Ms. Meyers was unsure if the accident caused the genetic mutation in this calf, or the cancers in her family but all signs point to the accident at Three Mile Island.

Nuclear reactors are still a pretty important source of our energy but they are slowly becoming decommissioned. Though power is a resource we struggle to produce from other sources and is probably best that nuclear power plants do become decommissioned at least until we find a more secure way to use nuclear energy with out having to worry about accidents. Nuclear power should not become obsolete though because as of right now it is the closest thing that we have to a renewable source of energy, it’s just something that we should learn to make safer.

The cleanup procedure cost the company around a billion dollars and took almost ten years to complete. This disaster hit the industry hard, which resulted in no new reactors to be built for a long time and some reactors were even shut down following the incident, as they were unable to
