If you have seen some of these channels, odds are that you have at least seen one program on a channel that is owned by Ted Turner. Ted Turner is one of the premier people that have made society the way it is today through television, movies, and sporting events. Turner’s achievements are almost an endless conversation. With all that he has created and once owned, Turner’s legacy will have an impact for generations well into the future.

Ted Turner is most known for the cable networks that he created and owns. These channels include: CNN, TNT, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network and WTBS (The Superstation). Each channel that is listed above is unique in its own way, following a presentation that airs different programs. CNN is the news channel that people throughout the world turn to in order to receive up to date information on various news information. With CNN, Turner created CNN Headline News. Turner has also bought a couple of successful movie productions to add to his list of achievements. After TBS and CNN were off and running, Turner acquired film productions of Castle Rock Entertainment, New Line Cinema, and Hanna-Barbera Cartoons.Turner also bought the rights to the film libraries of MGM/ United Artists films and Older Warner Brothers movies and certain RKO films. These acquisitions enabled Turner to create other networks. The first to be created was TNT (Turner Network Television). This channel focused on showing mainly movies and various television shows and sporting events. The next network to be created was Turner Classic Movies. Turner always envisioned a network that was committed to showing classic movies. After he bought the MGM/ United Artists films rights, Turner had enough film to create another network. Turner Classic Movies offers a selection from a library of some five thousand films from MGM, pre-1948 Warner Brothers, RKO, Columbia, Fox, and Paramount films (Lowe, 114). The next network to be created was Cartoon Network. The Hanna-Barbera deal made it possible to create a network that would show only cartoons. This network today not only shows classic cartoons, but also original and new age cartoons.

Each one of these networks individually had an impact on our culture. TNT is now in the top 10 most viewed cable networks (Bibb, 196). If that many people are watching the network, that shows that it does have significance.

As mentioned earlier, Turner is considered one of the largest donators in history. In 1997, he donated roughly over $1 billion to the United Nations. When this happened, it was news all around the world. Turner was always dedicated to achieving peace throughout the world. In his mind, he thought with such a large donation, he could somehow achieve this. This was quite significant in our culture. Turner was able to receive more recognition through this donation. Also, it made people look up at him.

twork that airs award-winning movies and original series. TNT also airs repeated classic shows that are still in syndication. Turner Classic Movies is what Turner considers some of his finest work. This channel airs classic movies that will always be loved by millions. These movies are also shown commercial-free, a uniqueness compared to any other basic cable channel. Cartoon Network is a channel that is dedicated to the people who love cartoons. With the rights to Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Cartoon Network found its base, airing these cartoons all the time. WTBS set the foundation for all of these networks by being the first. When cable television first started, TBS was one of the first to air any material. TBS will be discussed in further detail in a later paragraph.
