Rappers Seen in a Bad Light

When you hear the names of rappers such as the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, and Puff Daddy what thoughts cross your mind? Maybe you think of them as artists but most people think of them as thugs and hoodlums. Their names are associated with everything from drugs to drive-bys, murder to gunfights. There is a very negative stereotype surrounding rappers in American society today. We need to investigate why and how the rappers are given such bad reputations. We must also examine how the rappers’ violent images affect their ability to market themselves effectively and sell records. Another important aspect of this argument that we must analyze is how all of this violence is affecting our society.

Hip-hop artists have bad reputations mostly due to the violence that seems to follow them around. I believe the reason for this is the media’s constant extreme focus on rap stars and their subsequent violent behaviors. The biggest story to date in the hip-hop world was the feud that went on between the east coast rappers and west coast rappers. The assumed leaders were Tupac Shakur representing the west and the Notorious B.I.G. headed the east coast. During the war, the only time that rap was mentioned in the news was t

In conclusion, I think that the media purposely portrays the hip-hop community in a negative manor. Rap stars and the media both benefit from the media's violent portrayal of the artists. The bad reputation that is associated with rappers helps them to sell records. Violence is what American society is interested in today and that is what the rappers give them. The media also has something to gain by running such violent stories about such violent people. Their audience size and ratings escalate which means more money for them. This can have a very harmful effect on society. The more we hear about violence the more desensitized we become. Once we become desensitized to what they are saying the media and the artists must raise the level of violence in their news stories and song lyrics to arouse any kind of emotion out of their audiences.

The question we need to figure out is why the media only portrays the violent side of rap stars. I think the cold hard truth is that violence is a big money maker. If you have ever heard the saying “sex sells,” well the same is true about violence. I can think of several examples of rappers whose careers flourished after being involved in violent situations. After Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. were murdered their albums sold better than when they were alive. All the news about their deaths stirred up interest in the public. People went out and bought the records because they were curious to hear what the rappers' songs were ab
