Socrates

From what we learn of him in Plato does Socrates offer a philosophy that is genuinely progressive and radical in its wish to reform the society of the day? Following the Socratic model what role, if any, could philosophy play in addressing political and moral problems of our times?.
In this essay, I will attempt to argue that Socrates does offer the society of his day progressive and radical philosophy. His underlying aim is to reform society as he sees it. Evidence of this is supplied in the very reasoning behind his trial and subsequent death sentence. I will further argue that some of the Socratic principles could be taken for the greater good of our society, though certainly not all. I will rely on two of Plato's works in my argument, The Apology and The Crito. Issues that I will base my argument on are the important questions of Truth, Justice, Death and State Law. .
In The Apology, Socrates sets about on a course to instil his moral mission. He seems much less concerned with the offering of an impressive or significant defence while he speaks passionately about truth, justice and death. He makes the bold assertion that the source of moral authority rests on knowledge. He firmly declares himself to posses no conceit of knowledge. In the Socratic view, unless a person knows what the right thing to do is, he/she cannot be a moral person. In this realm, the need for moral experts emerges as Socrates holds with his view the "the many" will always get it wrong: .
Take the case of horses. Do you believe that those who .
improve them make up the whole of mankind and that .
there is only one person who has a bad effect on them?.
             (25b-c).
He further argues that most people do not commit deeds, which are morally wrong through intention, but rather through ignorance:.
Either I have not a bad influence, or it is unintentional.
