W.E.B. DuBois
The radical civil rights leader, William Edward Burghardt DuBois, may have put it best when he said, “The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery.” The quote by DuBois was his reflection, as well as one shared by many other blacks, as to what was occurring in the aftermath of the Civil War, in the period known as Reconstruction. In 1865, it was becoming clear that the Civil War was nearing an end, so the nation under Abraham Lincoln began looking toward the future, in the reconstruction of the south. During this period of uncertainty, many questions were left unanswered, primarily regarding blacks, and their new found freedom. Some blacks believed the way to secure freedom was by confiscating land from the wealthy white la
ndowners and having the government allocate the land for blacks, giving them an opportunity to make economic progressions. Others asked for equal protection under the law, believing that they would be able to progress with the obstacles out of the way. White southerners on the other hand held a completely different view on freedom, believing it gave blacks the opportunity to control their own lives without any government involvement. In holding this view the South in essence was attempting to restore society back to what it had been before the Civil War. They made their first attempt with the passage of laws in1865-1866.
