Lord of the Flies Brutality versus Cruelty
The book, Lord of the Flies, is a perfect example of what happens when a group of kids are placed into adult situations. The boys on the island were students used to rules and regulations. The plane crash that caused the boys to be on this island is the reason that the boys will now have to fend for themselves. Boys like Piggy and Ralph believe that rules are necessary in order to maintain civility. To do this they use the conch shell that was found on the island when they first arrived. They believe that the conch shell will be able to make the island somewhat civilized. This is explained by Ralph when he says "we can use it to call the others, we can have a meeting" (Golding 10). They believe that the island will become more civilized with the conch shell if only the person holding the conch shell can speak. However, unlike Ralph and Piggy, Jack and Roger believed in control and extreme force against others in order to rule. The behavior of Jack and Roger toward the littluns, Simon, and Piggy is just like Adolf Hitler during the Holocaust of World War Two. During the Holocaust, Hitler’s' followers acted in immoral ways towards others. These followers did evil acts to the Jewish people. In the book, t
can get out of hand and innocent people can have their lives taken away. Piggy was killed because Roger had no respect for anyone who did not follow the ways of Jack and the hunters. Roger killed Piggy for two reasons: 1) Piggy was not in his gibe and 2) Roger was a very violent person. Therefore when Piggy did not have his glasses and could not see, Roger saw this as a perfect opportunity to get rid of one of the boys. He used Piggy's "handicap" as a means to kill him. Roger did not like Piggy from the beginning of the book just because of his opinions and that he was fat. Roger wanted someone like Jack who could be mean and vicious with him and would be mean to everyone else. The boys basically wanted to form a dictatorship government. Jack wanted to rule because he was not voted as chief in the beginning and this upset him very much. Roger kills Piggy by rolling a boulder off a cliff. Piggy could not see because Jack had stolen his glasses so that they could start a fire. Piggy wanted his glasses back and with Roger being the violent person he is did not care therefore he went to the top of Roger and Jack both saw good out of the cruelty and brutality people received from them. When Simon was killed they had no remorse towards him dying and they believed that it was just a part of being civilized. They liked to watch people get hurt and be killed. They did not care who got hurt or how they got hurt. Roger and Jack would be cruel to anyone they could be cruel to, no matter what time or place. Roger and Jack were meant to be hunters and kill in their perspective. Whenever someone got hurt Roger and Jack would just go on with their business like nothing ever happened. Roger and Jack would even be mean to the littluns. William Golding explains this by saying "Roger led the way straight through the castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, and scattering the chosen stones" (50). The littluns did not do anything to Jack or Roger yet because of their nature they believe that this is the way to trea
