Labour Party of Great Britain and the Socialist PartyFrance

There are many differences and few similarities between the Labour Party of Great Britain and the Socialist Party of France. Obviously a major difference is that they make their homes in different countries with different political structures. The two parties have undergone many changes in the past few decades. In their respective countries these two parties have been winners and losers in past elections. They don’t have complete dominance like the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, nor are they constantly at the bottom like the Free Democratic Party of Germany. By taking a closer look at the two party’s framework and history, a slight resemblance as well as contrasting characteristics can be seen.

Founded in 1905, the Socialist Party is a major political force in France. The party was founded on Marxist principles that were dedicated to ending capitalism in France. However, those ideas began to change in the early 1970’s. In 1972 the party began to falter and decline. Sensing a need for change the party placed Francois Mitterrand as the party‘s leader. A major accomplishment of the party under Mitterrand was the party’s outright victory in 1982

Clearly the Labour Party of Great Britain and the Socialist Party of France aren’t one and the same. However, both parties are of the Left, and both have gone through periods of taking extreme stances on certain issues. It is difficult to say which party has had the more stable leadership. Since both parties have been riddled with inept past leaders it is a challenge to say which party has had a better history. The Socialist Party of France was led by Francois Mitterand who transformed the party from a cellar dweller to a force to be reckoned with, while Tony Blair has done the same work as Mitterand in bettering his party. The lone deciding factor would be that Mitterand had a longer tenure as party head, though Tony Blair’s tenure gets longer every day. These two leaders have elevated their respective parties to the forefront of their countries, as well as making themselves identifiable world figures in the process.

Another major difference in the two parties is their future. It appears that the Labour Party will enjoy a long period of dominance in British politics. The Socialist Party on the other hand has many undecided issues left staring it in the face. The French people are fed up with the very high unemployment rate and mounting immigration problems. It appears that it just might be a matter of time until the moderate conservative parties pull out a victorious election and dethrone the Socialist Party of France. Two different parties in different political climates are bound to have major differences. Yet, if looked at very closely one can see that the two parties have radical roots that they have partially abandoned. They were both once at the bottom, but now they both sit at the top. Seemingly horses on the political carousel that rides in never ending circles.

With many of its voters now supporting the far Right, plus the emergence of factions, the Socialist Party of France is at a crossroads. It appears as if the party’s shift to a more conservative stance has cost it much of its support. The party has failed to broaden its base, and if it weren’t for the National Front’s power in the elections over the center and right wing, the Socialist Party probably wouldn’t be in power.
