At this part in the novel all the characters’ actions lead up to an event or problem that could arise and lead into a deeper look into that character. In this part the main characters are Briony, Cecilia, and Robbie. The main focus is on Briony and her new experiences at the ward, and the issues that she is still bewildered by – the false statement in court, that day of infamy – that could have made the future unavailable. The saddest part of it is that although Briony did cause all the anguish and the uncertainty, she will forever have to live with it that she caused the problems and that her sister will never talk to her the way she did; especially when Briony feels so sorry and is extraordinarily apologetic. Even though Cecilia was in fact not the kindest of sisters, she loved her sister, and I think that this is the first time that it is even hard for Cecilia to not forgive her. “I won’t ever forgive you” (318). Cecilia saying this shows that although they are sisters, she made everything harder for her and Robbie and made the dream like state of happiness now an Unavailable Future. Cecilia’s future could have been so wonderful and pleasing with Robbie; however, it is still pos

The opportunity that was there is forever gone and not even a written apology from Briony can fix it, what is done is done. Robbie’s time with Cecilia is very limited, and it is all because of the one day that Briony acted out and caused two persons lives to be greatly affected. He looked at his watch. “Better get moving” (319). Robbie comes to see Cecilia with the time that he has off and can’t even have 2 hours alone with Cecilia the woman that he is probably going to marry and loves dearly. Robbie is in a very awkward but compelling situation. He is currently in front of the girl (Briony) that ruined his life and made him go through literal hell in jail and now the large possibility of death serving in the war that isn’t looking like a victory. “I don’t know why you let her in” (322). It is impossible for one person to imagine what it is like to know that one person, and one person alone ruined your hopes and dreams. For someone to ruin someone else’s life is a very powerful thing, almost like saving a life. Briony did in fact mean well, but at the end her sub conscious was set on a certain individual so even if it didn’t hold the sha
