Talking heads
A Lady of letters, is a monologue written by Allan Bennett. He wrote about a lady by the name of Irene and in this monologue Irene is a lady of letters meaning she loves to write letters. In this assignment, the differences between the way in which she perceives her life and the way in which we, the audience, interpret her narrative will be discussed. Also, the devices that Allan Bennett uses to emphasis the gap between what she wants to believe about her life and what we tend to conclude about her situation will be identified. Also, there is the unfolding ‘kiddy’ story. The parents were always seem to be going out at nights and leaving the ‘kiddy’ at home alone and the father also having time to mess with the car and they are not taking care of the baby which is why Irene thinks the ‘kiddy’ looks so sick. Where as in the end we find out that the ‘kiddy’ was ill and was placed in hospital and the parents had to keep going to visit and stay with the ‘kiddy’ in the night. Hence, the reason the father had to be repairing the car, to make sure it is working well, to take them back and forth to the hospital. In the end the ‘kiddy’ was very ill and eventually died of Leukaemia. This was the reason why Irene was not seeing the ‘kiddy’ again.
