Ballet Repretory Theatre - Fall Festival
On September seventh, I attended The Ballet Repertory Theatre perform in their Fall Festival. Their performance showcased such a variety of ballet ranging from the classics like Act II of Marius Petipa’s La Bayadere to more contemporary ballet such as the last piece of the show, Expressions. I was shocked to discover that the ages of these young performers ranged from around age ten to age 18. The performance began with Act II of La Bayadere otherwise known as “the kingdom of the shades.” Chills ran through my body as the Corps de Ballet entered with the parade of arabesques this Act is most known for. I saw The Bolshoi Ballet perform the full-length version of La Bayadere last November and I have to admit that these young ballerinas performed the parade of arabesques with just as much stage presence as The Bolshoi Ballet. Expressions, was the closing piece of the performance. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed the classical music used for the four movements of this dance. The fun, contemporary choreography of Expressions was done by Anthony Sellars. I enjoyed Expressions because it allowed the principal dancers and soloists of this company to show off what they can do. My two favorite sections of this dance were the partnering section and the all male section. I saw some breath taking lifts during the partnering section of this piece. Joshua Haines & Stephanie Stellrecht looked great together and they were fun to watch because they were the youngest of the couples. I also enjoyed the section where all five male dancers performed together. They showed off their best leaps, jumps, and multiple turns and they proved to be very powerful, yet still graceful.
