Gun Control Not Gun Removal

The Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” In the past few decades this amendment has been a very debatable topic of discussion. Some believe that it should be removed from the Constitution while others are willing to do whatever it takes so ensure that this aspect of liberty stays in tact. If a right is so controversial and so passionately argued over, wouldn’t it benefit you to truly understand what exactly it is before a permanent decision is made? Gun control is the regulation of the sale or distribution of firearms, however extreme the rules may be. That is the area where many Americans disagree with gun control. Society agrees with only one of the two sides of the gun control spectrum; either eliminating the legality to posses or own a firearm or the legitimacy of an endless supply of artillery for sale and the ability to carry those weapons. There are two main arguments: one, that guns kill people and without them there would be less crime, less death, and less fear. The other, that without the right to bear a

When gun control laws are passed the statistics obviously state that less people die when citizens are permitted to carry firearms. In her essay titled “Concealed Carry Prevents Violent Crimes”, Sarah Thompson explains how dramatic these statistics really are: “whenever a concealed carry law (law allowing people to carry a gun) went into effect in a county from 1977 to 1992, murders fell by 8.5 percent, rapes by 5 percent, and aggravated assaults by 7 percent. If, in 1992, all states had put concealed carry laws into effect, murders in the United States would have decreased by 1,570. There would have been 4,177 fewer rapes and over 60,000 fewer aggravated assaults.” She continues to say “This unequivocally supports the wisdom of our Founding Fathers who guaranteed that our right to keep and bear arms ‘shall not be infringed’” (503). The facts don’t lie. It is very understandable for someone to think guns are the reason behind most of the murders and related crimes in America because in fact, guns are used to commit these crimes. But the fact of the matter is that after looking at the statistics on concealed carry laws, it is hard to imagine anyone not supporting the right to bear arms. With laws to regulate the distribution of firearms America’s murder rate could be cut in half and American citizens could feel safer than ever before.

It is a fact that guns do save lives, as ironic as that might sound. In an article in The Washington Times, John R. Lott Jr. explains that in major American cities where crime rates are above average such as Chicago, Illinois, murder rates dropped from 27 to 22 for every 100,000 people in five years before a law that banned carrying guns was pu
