Pollution: A Leading Cause of Breast Cancer

In the last two centuries, cancer has moved from a rare disease to a common killer. Is it coincidence that pollution containing foreign matter has found its way into all aspects of our world? Is this knowledge being kept from us or is it just too depressing for society to handle? We read and are taught that “lifestyle” choices such as drinking , diet, smoking and stress are the main activities that cause cancer and if we don’t want to get cancer, they should be avoided. It’s true that these choices can cause cancer but maybe that’s because by doing those things the body is exposed to the same cancer causing elements that it’s exposed to while walking down the street. “Lifestyle choices” we can control in ourselves by our actions. Pollution we cannot. We are given this feeling of control by the many companies and governments profiting from our ignorance. They have created and profited from just some of the following: a wide array of chemical products including pesticides, hormones, whether medicinal or to fatten the meat of livestock or produce more milk for consumption, and nuclear radiation from bomb testing and power plants. They don’t want to stop making money just because we’ve finally learned that their p

production for financial gain, b) prescription purchased by women to prevent pregnancy and the side effects of menopause. The most widely used of these is diethylstilbestrol (funny the word “die” is the first part) also known as DES. DES was and is easy and cheap to manufacture, affording large profits to those companies that sell it. It’s made from coal-tar and petroleum products mainly manufactured by British, European, and American companies since 1934. In 1971 the same year DES was identified as a human carcinogen, it was being given to students by the directors of student health services in many American universities as effective contraception. As a consequence in 1979 before it was finally banned from much of the meat supply, DES came to be administered to nearly the entire United States population. (Sherman 89) Unfortunately, DES is just one of many synthetic hormones still in use by farmers today, including bovine growth hormone, all with relatively the same effect on the body.

outraged the women’s organizations and breast-cancer survivors of Long Island. Most had hunches that their disease was from the testings pollution but they needed facts gathered from scientific studies. The woman’s groups criticized the dismissive way the federal assoiciations conducting the studies seemed unconcerned with the origins of the disease. (Marks 1)

Another cancer causing element, synthetic hormones. It has been the practice for the latter part of last century to use synthetic hormones to, a) fatten livestock and increase milk
