Nell

This film is an intelligent examination of a doctor and his discovery of Nell; a woman who was raised in the woods with no contact except her speech impaired mother. The two doctors in the movie try to “take a fish out of water” and decipher her incomprehensible language and take her into the modern world. Nell has never been outside her own little world and is afraid of evil doers and fears being seen. Dr. Jerry Lovall and Dr. Paula Olson come to study Nell in the woods and they establish a friendship with Nell as if they were her parents.

Before these two doctors come to discover the beauty and innocence of Nell the only people she has had contact with are her now dead mother and dead sister. Her mother suffered from a stroke presumably before her sister and Nell were born, so the only language she ever knew was her mother’s cut off language with her speech impediment from the stroke. The way Nell’s mother talked (May) was one of the ways that formed her personality. In order to decide if Nell is competent or not

they must learn Nell’s unknown language. The two doctors figured out that there was nothing wrong with Nell’s speech, this was just the way she was taught to talk. Instead of putting all of the words on her sentences like “tree in the wind” she said “teh in the wind.” You can tell that Nell wants to hold on to all the characteristics of her mother. One thing in the movie that is very important to Nell is the Bible that her mother used to read to her.

Nell’s cultural environment was different from anyone else’s. She was like a newborn child that had to be taught everything. She had never seen such things as a camera or a car before. She could not just be put in the city and be expected to survive on her own. That would be like taking a wild animal out of its habitat and putting it in the city and expecting it to survive on its own and not to terrorize people. For example Nell wondered off by herself when they took her into the city and she was taken advantage of because she did not know right from wrong out of he
