Taoism today

The Taoist ideal is a person who avoids conventional social obligations and leads a simple, spontaneous, and meditative life close to nature (World Book Online). While researching the ancient philosophy and religion of Taoism, I realized that Taoism could be a very positive concept in not only my life but also the lives of many Americans. The teachings of Lao-tzu showed me many solutions to problems that arise everyday. I am going to look at a number of his writings and see how they can better improve my life as well as others.

“Fame or your body-which is more dear?

Your body or possessions-which is worth more?

Gain or loss-in which is there harm?

If your desires are great, you’re bound to be extravagant:

If you store much away, you’re bound to lose a great deal.

Therefore, if you know contentment, you’ll not be disgraced.

If you know when to stop, you’ll suffer no harm.

And in this way you can last a very long time. (Lao-Tzu by Robert G. Henricks)

Simplicity and contentment, these are two great principles of the Tao religion. In our world, it is a belief that money is happiness. People work their lives away to make money and some still never reach true happiness. I believe now that being content


Virtue is another teaching of Taoism that I believe myself and many other have lost sight.

The highest righteousness takes action, and it has its reason for acting this way;

Rolls up its sleeves and forces people to comply.” (Lao-tzu by Robert Henricks p. 7)

The lowest virtue never loses sight of its virtue; therefore it has no true virtue.

To understand yourself is to be wise.

To not lose your place is to last long.

The highest humanity takes action, yet it has no reasons for acting this way;
