Geneology of Christ
The Gospel of Matthew opens with genealogy of Jesus Christ. The genealogy in the Bible are all based on the view(common also among the Arabs) that nations, tribes and clans all develop in the same way: every human grouping is descended from a single father. Today, the genealogies in the Bible are considered to be skipped easily by many Christian readers. I have to admit myself that I never have paid attention to the genealogies until I began to see significances of its names being mentioned in the Bible. Especially the genealogy of Matthew itself has remarkable messages of Jesus Christ.The genealogy of Matthew is a summary introduction for the rest of the Gospel. It raises questions that give us three significant views that are the foundation of the Gospel. First, why those names of women is mentioned in the genealogy of Matthew? In fact, it¡¯s very rare to find the name of woman in other genealogies. Second, is this genealogy fulfilled the Messianic prophecies of Old Testaments prophets? Third, Why is it emphasized Mary being physical mother? What was Joseph¡¯s claim as a Jesus¡¯ physical father? The Gospel of Matthew was written mainly for the Jew. Any Jews would have expected him to have named the matriarchs of Israel: Saran, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel. Instead He names four women whose primary common link is their Gentile background: Tamar of Canaan, Rahab of Jericho, Ruth the Moabites, and the ex-wife of Uriah the Hittite. Matthew had meant to raise blood line of Jesus Christ which also delivered by their Gentile ancestry. He wanted to remind his reader that as much as Jesus was connected with Israel, He was for the Gentiles. heological context, we will find the account of messages that are crucial to understand the Gospel. Also Jews expected Messiah to be the descent of Abraham, who blessed with unconditional Covenant from God. Messiah had to be the one who brings divine blessings, which God promised to His people, to all nations including everyone. 1. Inclusion of women in the genealogy of Christ.
