The controversy behind eminem

Tuesday, November 18, 2003, a press conference was held. Ray Benzino, an owner of The Source magazine, brought to the media’s attention a cassette tape that was theoretically supposed to shake-up the whole hip-hop spectrum. A demo tape from 1993 (a member of the rapper’s camp had been said to come forward later to confirm that it was actually from 1988) had been resurfaced, and the rapper on the tape was none other than Eminem. The content on the tape is now being said to be the end of Eminem’s career, but fans and critics are unsure whether it will indeed damage his reputation, or if the tape will conversely help with Eminem’s publicity.

After hearing a transcript of the tape on one of New York’s radio stations, I was confused, angered, and left in disbelief by what I heard. The lyrics did not seem like that of Eminem’s. There was no real structure to the words or sentences, and though rap music is not known for its perfect grammar, this song seemed to run around in circles. Also, Eminem was obviously younger at the time of recording, but the voice on the tape did not sound like his at all.

On the tape, Eminem dwelled on the obvious, a topic being deemed racist by many, and repeated himself on a few occasions. M

As in the past, he verbally attacks something or someone who has wronged him. He has made tracks insulting and attacking his mother, ex-wife, critics, and of course, Benzino. There were newly found lyrics going after a girl who had obviously broken his heart on the tape, for once not his ex-wife, Kim. He expresses his hate towards this girl by using many derogatory terms associated with women.

Obviously this will not stop Eminem from making more records or creating more controversy, so although Benzino failed in bringing down his opponent, I think he resurfaced a more important issue in hip-hop: the objectification of women through music. Lyrics, advertisements, and music videos all contribute to this issue. Lyrics to 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” have begun a ‘pimp movement,’ along with the release of Nelly’s song ‘Pimp Juice’ - and one of the worst moments of all in women’s objectification was seeing Snoop Dogg holding two women by dog collars and leashes at the 2003 MTV VMAs.

Eminem has publicly apologized for what he said on the tapes, and it is safe to say we will not be hearing ideas like those from him in the future. Still, what were the reasons for him to make a record like this? Even after he wrote his feelings down, he continued with his anger by putting them on a record to be used as a demo tape. As a white rapper, shock value may have given Emi
