So You Want To Be a Street Racer
It’s hard to drive around and not notice the increasing amount of import hot rods these days. Everywhere you look; there is a Honda, Acura, or any other compact car rumbling around town. Since the release of “The Fast and The Furious”, a lot of the owners of these cars have turned into street racers or people who want to be street racers. Unfortunately, some just don’t have the knowledge to pull off the appropriate image that accompanies a street racer. There are three keys to being a successful street racer. These keys, in no particular order, are having a car with the looks and speed to back up your talk, being an able and competent driver, and knowing how to choose your races wisely. Follow these keys and you will be on the easy path to legendary status in street racing. Refuse to acknowledge these rules, and you will forever be a phony who just doesn’t fit in. First of all, if you want to race, you better have a car that can hold its own. Looks just won’t cut it on the street. The last thing you want is a car with “all show and no go”. At the bare minimum, your car should be equipped with a cold air intake pushing nice cool air into the engine and an exhaust header
If possible try to put some money on your races, especially those that are easy wins. More money equals more parts and that will inevitably put you higher up in the pecking order. Be smart when choosing your races. Losers are neither loved nor remembered. To be a major player, you have to be a winner. It is vital you know how to drive your car well. Accidents happen in street racing when incompetent drivers either make a mistake or overestimate their own abilities. Be sure that you know your car’s strengths and weaknesses. Never attempt something that you and your car are not fully capable of handling. A good racer knows when the conditions are not right and knows when to decline a race. For instance, don’t take your front wheel drive car on a race through the slush and ice, which is territory for all wheel drive cars. Stupidity can get people killed and should not be tolerated. Drivers need to gain on track, supervised experience before attempting any kind of risky maneuver on the open roads. Drive to your ability level. Nobody will be impressed when your car is totaled and you are in the hospital or worse yet the cemetery. It is impressive to see someone who truly knows their car and handles it wisely and safely. Driving and racing smart are vital to preventing accidents. Once you know how to race, you must be able to choose your races wisely.
