The Aztecs roamed throughout the today, Central America, until they found their city at the Island of Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs began their journey in 1168, in search of home with instructions from their god of war Huitzilopochtli. He told them to travel until the saw and eagle perching on a snake on a cactus. This was where they were destined to build their city. This did not happen until the year of 1325. During the same period as the Inca Empire, the Aztec Empire controlled Mesoamerican from Mexico to the territories of Salvador and Honduras for nearly 100 years. The Aztecs achieved domination of the valley by forming triple alliance’s with the neighbors at Texcoco and Tlacopan. The empire consisted of native speaking people known as the nahuatl-speakers, who had migrated from the Pacific Northwest and inhabited the area, which would become the capital of Mexico, Tenochtitlan.

The word of War had a different meaning to the Aztecs as it did to their alliances. They did set forth into a war to desecrate a village and leave it burned and lifeless. The conquered villages and integrated them into the Aztec society therefore providing a more productive and expanding community. Many emperors ruled the Aztecs but their legacy was passed from on ruler to the next. Around 1500 the Indian population was thought to have grown to 12.5 million and their empire reached from the modern day border of Guatemala to the coast of the Yucatan.
