Anne Shirley Vs. Lucy Maud Montgomery

“I love books. I hope when I grow up, to be able to have lots of them.” This journal entry, made in 1889, is significant to readers today. When Lucy Maud Montgomery grew up, she not only owned and read many books; she was also an author herself.

Anne of Green Gables is a well-known, fictional story, which appeals to all ages, races, and genders of people. It has been published in over forty languages, and it is known throughout the world. Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote this series of novels based on reflections on her own life. Anne of Ingleside is the last of the eight novels that she completed before her death on April 24, 1942 at the age of 68. Montgomery’s death was a major tragedy, not only to her hometown of Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, but also to her fans throughout the world.

The sixth book of the Anne of Green Gables, eight book series, is Anne of Ingleside. It is a story about Anne Shirley-Blythe, the main character who has moved to Ingleside, from Avonlea, to raise her children. Anne and Gilbert have five children together. Susan is there at home nanny who helps raise all the precious darlings.

Difficulties arise for Anne. Gilberts Aunt Marie Maria comes t

“Elderly couple apply to orphan Asylum for a boy. By mistake, a girl is sent to them” (1904).

Anne was also an orphan. Her parents had died when she was a baby, and she lived with Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert, an elderly brother and sister. Montgomery’s grandparents farm was called Green Gables and is described the same way in the book, as in real life. It was in a small town named Cavendish, which is where Montgomery spent most of her life and uses this in her novel as her fictional town named Avonlea (Literature Network). It was a beautiful place for Montgomery’s imagination to take her away. When Anne Shirley moved to Green Gables, she was not accepted at first since the Cuthbert’s wanted a boy, to do work on the farm. But as time grew, Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert learned to love Anne. Many of the places that existed in Montgomery’s life and her “world”, existed in Anne’s. They both had a deep love for nature. They would both talk to flowers and hug trees. Most of the characters, objects and places that Montgomery would describe in her books really existed in her life and she mentally collected all the stories she heard from her family and turned them into delightful stories to share with her readers. As children, Montgomery and her friends played in the Haunted Wood. In Anne’s “world”, there was a beautiful pathway called Lovers Lane. This went from Green Gables to a small meadow. Montgomery enjoyed many evenings strolling down the lane. She passed this joy onto her creation that also walked down Lovers Lane.

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on November 30, 1874, in Clifton, New London on Prince Edward Island. She was raised in Canada on the island, just like Anne Shirley (one of her most popular characters). Her family lived with her grandparents; the Mac Neils. They ran the town post-off
