THE CHURCH STATE PUZZLE
Open any newspaper or periodical and one cannot avoid finding a debate regarding religion and schools. In the American School Board Journal, I read an article entitled, The Church State Puzzle, by Cecile S. Holmes. The article begins with Ms. Holmes taking us back to September 11th and how many Americans were calling on God and/or religion to help us cope with the tragedy.More specifically, she refers to Texas Governor Rick Perry who prayed with middle school students following the attacks. The Republican Governor plans to make prayer in schools a plank in his 2002 Gubernatorial campaign platform. Holmes says, “Perry’s comments, forthright and politically astute, summarize the outlook of many Americans in the aftermath of September 11th”. Holmes later points out that some religious readings are in accordance with a few goals of our schools. Referring to the Ten Commandments, South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges (D), says the commandments represent the basic elements of character education. “It seems to me that no matter what your religious background, that the essential elements of the Ten Commandments are really the sort of things we try to teach our kids and [how we should] treat each other, too.”
