Technological impact on work practice - Computer Maintenance
‘Well! It’s a computer maintenance business. Virtually everything under the topic of technology would be associated with this field of industry.’ (Or something along those lines) anyway… The major technology in this business is computers. My Dad and brother are in the business, and you’re telling me! I don’t want to hear anything about what they have to do, but anyway I’ll just stop babbling and get to the point now. The technologies used in this workplace are basically, knowledge, computers and their insides (or commonly know as… hardware), tools like screwdrivers and then the software. Some technologies associated with this type of business but usually with others as well include; cars or vans, mobile phones and pagers, and the good old paper and pen.

For example you’re just an average shmuck, you are happily browsing E-bay and then, poo, your computer froze up. You’re not too worried ‘cause this sometimes happens, but then to your horror your computer will not boot back up into Windows… oh no! Something inside the computer has gone bye byes. Well this is where the Yellow Pages comes handy, now instead of standing on top of it this time to reach for those champagne glasses, you open it to the section where the number of a computer maintenance business would be, wherever that might be and you give one of them a call. They come to your home – charging you for the trip to your house of course – then look at your computer, open up the case with a screwdriver and look at all those green plastic boards. It seems that the computers memory has to be replaced. Now they replace the memory, charge you 20 – 30% more then what it cost them to buy it and then charge you an hours worth of labour.
