Poetry Appreciation

What comes in tons of different styles, lengths, tones themes and almost everyone has an opinion about it? No, It is not the new dress at the mall. I am talking about poetry. People have been writing and reading poetry for centuries. From ages two to one hundred and two everyone appreciates some form of poetry. Whether it is, the simplest Roses are red and Violet's are blue poem or it is a highly structured Shakespearean sonnet everyone can find a poem that appeals to them. The three poems that will be analysed in the following work are "Somebody Should Have Taught Him," "Love Me- Love Me Not," and the poem "He Is Not the Man That He Used to Be." These poems are all similar in theme, structure and appeal.
             .
The following poems all explore the theme of loss. The first poem entitled, "Somebody Should Have Taught Him," deals with the loss of a life. It is about how her life was stolen from her by a drunk driver. " I can hear the paramedic say, "This girl is going to die."" This line proves that it is about the loss of life but it also goes deeper than that. It is about the loss of opportunity as well as the loss of a daughter, sister, friend etc. .
The second poem called, "Love Me- Love Me Not," deals with lost love. It is about how all of the love in these two people's relationship is gone. The author questions if they will still love her when times get hard and if this person ever truly loved them at all. "Will you still love me when I am old and the pain had come?" Love is another form of loss and it is one that everyone can relate to.
The third poem "He Is Not the Man That He Used to Be," is a bit more complicated. It deals with many forms of loss. It is about the loss of a soul, a spirit and a will to live. It is about a lost relationship between a man and his family. When it comes down to it, it is about the loss of the man himself, As the poem clearly states, He is not the man that he used to be.
