Republic vs. empire

Rome used to be the capital of the world, it controlled the whole Mediterranean Sea and taxed populations of three different continents. It was a small village that went through much regional and international suffering but this only turned it into the capital of the world with an excellent law system and a successful government. The Romans abandoned the republican form of government because it had little positive aspects and it was bound to fail so they chose to rely on Emperors to govern their empire as they contributed to its success and inevitably, a few of its downfalls. Class differences caused too many problems within the republic and many people suffered from the consequences of the emperors’ own failures. At some point, the republic’s government was very well balanced which resulted in serenity and the empire’s economy flourished when emperors did all that was in their power to make Rome a bigger and better place.

The Republic failed to please Rome’s people, as it didn’t distribute wealth fairly. The lower class obviously did not enjoy this since they were overtaxed and often homeless. The richer citizens were, as opposed to the poorer, under-taxed and benefited from many lands instead of just one (Class notes

Despite the many inconveniences that the republic had, it had its positive sides. After some time, laws were made to form a more organized government and power was shared amongst most citizens. The government was a mixture of an aristocracy, a monarchy and a democracy, which was to the benefit of all citizens since they believed it was a balanced government. For the second half of the republic, slavery ended and there was more equality between Plebeians and Patricians after the civil war so this resulted in a peaceful and exemplary republic (Krieger, p.125-126).

Empire or Republic? The Roman citizens had to make a choice. To every decision there are negative sides as well as positive ones and in the Romans’ point of view, living under the rule of an emperor seemed more appealing because brought more success to their city and helped it flourish. Their negative sides were less disastrous than the republic’s failures, which seemed innumerable. Seems today that they made the right choice because if they didn’t, Rome would have never become the capital of the world and it would have probably not succeeded as much as it did in result to the emperors’ work.
