The RIAA has even been sending instant messages to Kazaa and Grokster users, saying, “When you break the law, you risk legal penalties.” As it appears to the RIAA, it is having a huge impact on the number of downloads, causing a 10% to 15% dip in downloading, as NPD reports.

As a whole this campaign is setting an example, and other nations are now following its lead, as stated in Billboard magazine. The RIAA is doing all they can right now, because of the enormous amounts of file-swappers, to stop these egregious file-swappers on at a time.

A Research firm, NPD Group, reports that the number of households that download music files from P2P’s is declining. The decline started in May, with the launch of the RIAA campaign. After a high of 14.5 million households engaged in P2P music downloads in April, the June figure was down to 10.4 million, a 28% drop. Although that number is going down, among those that are downloading, the number of files downloaded is on the rise. This study was based on a study of 40,000 internet users.
