In the year 1849 a great man was born who had a great impact on the United States of America. His name was Jacob Riis. He was born in Ribe, Denmark in 1849. Jacob Riis was the 3rd of 13 children in his family.
As a young child going into his teens he was noticed for many things he did. When he was around 9 or 10 years old he would give his pocket money to the residents of his hometown. He reported about the slums in the city where immigrants stayed and it was not clean and the streets were full of garbage. His stories had a great affect on the lives of fellow Americans caught in the middle of it all and would not try to do anything about it. They could have at the least try to help them out by giving them things likes clothes food or some money at the least. Instead they just complained about the immigrant trashing the city and making it a mess should have just been quiet. They were not out there trying to help instead all they did was sit and complain and did nothing about it finally that is why Jacob Riis was a great American, because he that tried to help the Immigrants.
In 1914 the year of his death his family had to find out what to do with his collection of pictures and papers that he did. They gave the photographs to the museum of the city of NY. His family donated his collection of papers that he wrote to the library so that people could read all about the immigrants and how they lived in the cities in the 1800 to 1900s.
