Old Money is cleverly written play by Wendy Wasserstein. This two act play combined two eras into one location. The character Jeffery Bernstein holds an A-list dinner party in his newly refurbish Pfeiffer mansion. The mansion originally was build for the robber baron Tobias Vivian Pfeiffer. I received the impression to that Jeffery bought this mansion just because he could. His character seemed to think out of the box and was a high risk taker. That’s how he made his fortune. Jeffery does not seem to care what others think of him. It appeared to me like he was having the party just because that is what rich people do. I think that his son, Ovid was the best character in the play. I think that an actor could have fun with his role. This character was a very intelligent young man who brought everyone together. He pleased everyone but still managed to push his father’s buttons. This gave the character so
The play really starts to get going when Vivian Pfeiffer arrives per Ovid’s invitation that day. He is the grandson of the original owner of the mansion. This character is sweet and down to earth. He gives history about the mansion. He also shares his personal stories and experiences in the house. I related this character because he reminded me of my grandfather. Who was always filled with facts and personal stories. Vivian brought the first era to the play. This character added facts and history to give the story some validity.
By the second act I got confused with the story. I could not tell when the climax was or the height of the play. I got confused with the actors who played two roles. Both names were next to the lines. I could not separate the characters in my head and what role they had. By the end I could not tell who was who and what was what.
