Racism has existed since the beginning of time. Prejudice developed from over 200 years ago. Still today there are racial discrimination throughout the world. There are a few ways that the government has prevented racism throughout the world. One of the most famous prevention of discrimination is Affirmative Action.

Affirmative action is defined as “a policy or program for correcting the effects of discrimination in the employment of education of members of certain groups” ( ). This policy calls for minorities and women to be carefully considered in employment and educational department. Also the affirmative action policy was creation for minorities and women as a better opportunity by allowing ethylic backgrounds to be a factor. By allowing this, affirmative action seeks to separate the barrier of racial inequality ( ). Businesses have quotas, which is a certain amount of minorities the company would have to hire ( ). In addition, affirmative action protects minorities, women, and others from discrimination in the workforce ( ). It is also the nation’s most effective way to rectify the issues of sexual and racial discrimination ( ). For instance, if there was no affirmative action, qualified


In general the idea of eliminating racial discrimination and supporting equal rights is a good intention on behalf of the government. Because of affirmative action, many minorities and women will not be discriminated against anymore. As long as social inequality is here, we will need affirmative action.

Affirmative action plays a major role in minorities in higher education and in the workforce. It also may be called a stepping-stone for a more equal society. Since 1960, of the top Americas colleges, 43,000 African Americas have received their degrees (Greenburgh, 2002, p 568). The ratio of doctors, lawyers, and mechanics has greatly increased (Greenburgh, 2002, p.569). by participating in higher education programs, minorities could increase their knowledge and skills in the workforce. Also by going to the prominent schools, minorities can locate higher paying careers to improve their lives. In addition, plays an immense part in the workforce. Affirmative action gives more diversity in jobs. With diversity, people will know more about each other and their backgrounds. The jobs in the law enforcement have increased greatly since the 1960’s ( Cyrus, 1996).

Numerous amounts of people believe that affirmative action has many disadvantages that surround it. Affirmative action has caused vast amounts of debate since it originated in 1961 ( ). People opposing affirmative action believes it creates an unfair advantage to others with the same skills in the workplace ( ). One reason affirmative action is unfair to the business executives ( ). For example, a company should hire people according to their skills and not their race. A company would endanger their profits and maybe hire less skilled workers for a job. Another way is affirmative action forces an employer to hire a minority and they could spend unnecessary money ( ). When they have all of the positions occupied and need to meet quota, they would have to create a useless job for a minority. That would cut profits for the company.
