Marshall Mathers LP

In today's society the arts are a very effective way to let people express their beliefs and try to communicate their ideas and feelings inside them to an outside audience. An artist’s success is usually based on how well he or she can communicate their thoughts and words indirectly through a medium to their audience. In some cases an artist’s beliefs can be extremely controversial and could cause much debate in society. Music is one of the arts that has been found to be controversial in the past few decades as musicians try to express what's going on in the minds though the medium of music.

Over the past five years, there has been no other artist who has been more controversial and in the middle of numerous debates in society than Eminem. When he broke into the mainstream of radio stations all over the country in 1997, people were shocked at first with his lyrics and some wondered if he was serious when he brought up issues in his songs such as homosexuality, domestic abuse, drug abuse, and suicide. His songs raised eyebrows at first and had censors all over the country frantically trying to stop him from saying the things that were on his mind. His first album was very successful and went m

The claims he makes on this album aren’t the literal claims in the issues he talks about, but instead his claims come out indirectly in his lyrics. His claim is basically that artists should be able to express themselves in whatever manner they feel necessary as long as they don’t infringe on the rights of others, which is the basic principle of our democracy. To fully understand Eminem as an artist, people need to look beyond the violent, homophobic lyrics and really listen to his words. Not only does he explain to his audience that he doesn’t mean or do the sings he raps about, he also claims in one song that he likes gay men and he says that half the things he says he just makes up to make people mad. His critics however, don’t hear these things because they only hear what they want to hear and Eminem is adamant about the fact that he isn’t the person most people think he is.

ulti-platinum in months but no one could’ve imagined the success he would have with his second album, the Marshall Mathers LP.

What most people are confused about is why the album was so successful if it was so offensive to so many people. The answer to this question lies in the very basic idea of America, which is freedom. In Eminem’s case, the freedom of expression and the freedom of speech to say whatever is on his mind at the time he was writing lyrics for his album. To some extent, Eminem was speaking for everyone who is in favor of freedom of speech. He was trying to push all the censors and critics to get on him so he could show society how they are constantly trying to limit our basic amendment rights. He even tells his audience on this album that the things he says aren’t necessarily what he believes and the events he talks about he doesn’t actually do, but instead he is just being an artist which means thinking of new ideas to bring up. He loves the idea of being at the center of the media and it played right into his hands on this album as he went multi-platinum again and is one of the most successful rap artists of all time.

On this album, Eminem went beyond lyrical limits in some people’s
