“Schindler’s List” by Thomas Keneally is based on the true story of Oscar Schindler who surfaced from the chaos of madness, spent millions bribing and paying off the SS and eventually risked his life to rescue 1200 Jews in the shadow of Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Schindler’s efforts were monumental in that he died penniless trying to save the Jews from the gas chambers. Like any character with power during this time, Schindler is portrayed as trying to do too much, as he thought his efforts were not great enough.

Keneally portrays Oscar Schindler as a great hero of his time, in which he was in all actuality. There were few individuals of that time, including Schindler himself and Georgette Fry who risked their freedom to save those who were on the verge of death. Heroic individuals such as these two have had numerous fiction books based around their efforts towards the Holocaust.

“Hana’s Suitcase” by Karen Levine is based on Levine’s radio documentary, also called Hana’s Suitcase, which appeared on The Sunday Edition. In a suspenseful journey, Fumiko - Japan’s Holocaust Education Centers curator searches for clues across Europe and North America. The mystery of the suitcase takes her back through seventy years, to a young Hana Brady and her family, whose happy life in a small Czech town was turned upside down by the invasion of the Nazis.
