The simpsons as an icon? ...doh!
In a seemingly quiet and adorning neighborhood lies a house at 742 Evergreen Terrace. With canary yellow walls and a vibrantly colored pumpkin orange front door, and garage door, this house looks like just your average house. In the driveway lies a pink sedan with a oil stain under the car, and a cherry red station wagon that looks like it was bought somewhere in the 1970's. If you take a look at the mailbox you see the family name painted in black, Simpson. What comes to ones mind when you hear the family name Simpson? For me and a lot of people out there the first thing you think of is the extremely popular television show The Simpsons, it is one of the most popular and longest running television shows in our time, and in this time of ever changing network schedules, with shows that don’t even make it after their first airing. The Simpsons have not only lasted, but it has also become a staple of American life. Who would have ever thought that a cartoon about a dysfunctional eccentric middle class family would go on to become a part of peoples lives the way that it has. The Simpsons is a television program that is enjoyed by both children and adults at the same time. It has
The Simpsons have covered topics of controversy and issues that are problems in our society today. Characters in the show say things all of the time that aren’t said in everyday life, and highly controversial, Homer: “Lisa, Vampires aren’t real, they’re fictional, like elves, santa, and eskimos”(Mason). They have covered everything from drug use, to immigration issues, and almost every political issue. They have also had numerous guest appearance by famous celebrities including Paul Mcartney, Bob Hope, James Earl Jones, Buzz Auldrin, and Stephen Hawking (The Simpsons). For me, the reason that I’ve watched the show, and have been a dedicated fan since the beginning is because of this simple fact, it makes me feel normal at times when I don’t. I can watch the show and see these outrageous episodes where these middle class people, like myself, get into situations where I can relate to on a certain level, and sometimes while I am watching this show I feel myself being comforted by their crazy antics. Basically, I watch the show and feel like all the mistakes I have made, my money problems, and family problems are “normal”, when most of the time I feel like they are embarrassing, and find myself ashamed of them. This television shows highlights the lives of middle class families, where in other shows they hardly ever do. I think that for a lot of people this show is all about humor, and most importantly comfort. You can see the popularity of this show by just going to the store and seeing all of the souvenirs you can purchase, they even have a Simpsons editions monopoly game. There is no doubt that this show has made a huge impression on many peoples lives. People are heard quoting episodes from The Simpsons all the time, and comparing certain episodes to their daily lives. For fifteen years this family has been entertaining us, even educating us to some extent, and will always be an important symbol of American pop culture. captivated millions of fans and still continues to go strong even after fifteen years. But why is that? A lot of this is due to the fact that this show seems to be a mirror image of a middle class family in the United Sates. This show is one of the first shows that has aired on television that depicts the lives of many people in our middle class society today. They have characters in the show that most other television shows do not portray often, and if they do, they are not in the storylines abundantly like the way they are in this television series. These characters I am talking about are the ones that are alcoholics, single parents, the poor, and many more.
